In garage33 – located in Paderborn – young entrepreneurs and existing companies work on new ideas. Garage33 offers them space for creativity and contributes to the establishment of the regional start-up scene.

Garage33 is the founding incubator which was opened in Paderborn in May 2017. Together with the economic association “Paderborn convinces”, the university in Paderborn and regional business partners such as Hella, Miele, Dr. Oetker, Benteler, Wortmann and GEA the innovation centre was created in technology park 8, which has a great influence for the region of East Westphalia-Lippe. Garage33 owes its name to the belief that a number of very good ideas originally started in a garage. The number “33” expresses the regional reference – not only the postcode for Paderborn begins with 33 but also the motorway A33 runs through the region.

Taking garage33 as the starting point the technology transfer and business start-up centre of the university in Paderborn (TecUP) supports regional start-up activities by sensitisation, qualification and targeted coaching of entrepreneurs interested in founding their own business and start-ups. At the same time TecUP also offers its regional business partners an innovation centre in order for them to work on disruptive products, processes and business models together with start-ups, students and scientists of the university.

At the university in Paderborn TecUP offers a variety of qualification opportunities designed for all university members – regardless whether these are students or scientists. Support for all aspects of the topics business start-up, innovation and transfer is offered. The necessary background knowledge is conveyed via the manifold offer of courses and projects on the topics company foundation and innovation management as well as via a number of practical workshops. In this context in cooperation with medium-sized companies in the region TecUP provides so-called “Disrupt workshops”. Students of all university departments are invited to develop disruptive innovations together with company staff within the test environment of garage33 on two intensive workshop days.

During such a workshop, for instance, the ambitious start-up syqlo was created and garage33 is where its registered office is located. Syqlo specialises in the automation of business processes by way of 3D technologies, augmented reality and app solutions. Using their developed apps smartphones can intelligently record their surroundings and make them available for targeted analyses thus making documentation tasks in the energy sector much easier and faster. The app is, for example, used for measuring supply cables.

Garage33 comprises six garages and a further six founder offices, co-working space for about 30 founders, a lounge area as well as an amphitheatre that insiders call “arena”. Here among others the latest ideas are presented to investors. Apart from the generous and flexible spatial equipment the TecUP has far more to offer: for example individual coaching. TecUP coaches have a great deal of experience in looking after and consulting young start-up entrepreneurs, some of them have been through the establishing phase themselves in the past and provide constructive feedback for every foundation idea. At present the TecUP team cares for 105 founders in various “progress stages” – 38 of these foundation teams belong to the coaching programme.

The start-ups in garage33 are primarily based on technology-orientated and knowledge-intensive business ideas. For instance, the foundation team of Intab Pro is to be mentioned in this respect. They offer a web service that creates a fully automated and mathematical sales forecast for bakeries. In this way food waste is avoided and profits are increased.

StudyHelp GmbH, currently located in the city centre of Paderborn, has, for example, already “outgrown” garage33. StudyHelp supports individual school children and students in preparing for exams and offers a mixture of 3-day crash courses, free learning videos on YouTube and Facebook tuition groups. Since its foundation in 2013 the core team has increased to 16 persons and there are more than 300 teachers at 230 locations in Germany and Austria actively working for StudyHelp.
